This notice was issued by the tax authorities on Thursday, triggering a regulatory filing by LIC.
The demand notice includes charges for interest and penalty specific to Maharashtra. LIC confirmed the receipt of the communication/demand order and mentioned that it is appealable before the Joint Commissioner of State Tax (Appeals) in Mumbai.
The issue revolves around the incorrect availment and inadequate reversal of Input Tax Credit (ITC) along with delayed payments, resulting in interest penalties. Subsequently, LIC received a GST notice of Rs 294 crore, accompanied by interest (Rs 281 crore) and a penalty (Rs 29 crore) from the deputy commissioner of state tax, Mumbai.
However, despite this development, there is no significant impact on LIC’s financials, operations, or other activities. The corporation continues to maintain its strong market presence, boasting over 14.1 lakh agents, one of the largest agency forces globally.
In terms of performance, LIC’s market share in first-year premium income has seen a rise to 64% from 61.4% year-over-year. The company holds a solid position with a 39.3% market share in the individual business segment and a dominating 76.6% share in the group business.
Financially, LIC’s total premium income for the quarter grew by 15.7% to Rs 1,13,770 crore, indicating a positive trajectory. The individual business premium increased by 7.04% to Rs 67,192 crore, while the group business premium saw a significant 30.9% rise to Rs 46,578 crore.
Furthermore, LIC’s assets under management surged by 16.2% year-over-year, reaching Rs 54 lakh crore. The company’s solvency ratio also improved to 2 from 1.9 in the previous year, highlighting its financial stability and resilience.
Overall, LIC’s performance demonstrates a robust operational efficiency, as reflected in the decrease of the overall expense ratio by 98 basis points to 11.9%. This indicates a strong position for LIC in the insurance industry, with a steady growth trajectory and a commitment to excellence.
