The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a warning to citizens regarding a recent spike in SMS scams posing as messages from India Post. These fraudulent messages falsely claim that individuals need to urgently update their PAN card details to prevent their India Post Payments Bank accounts from being blocked, putting unsuspecting victims at risk of financial harm.
In a statement shared on X, the PIB Fact Check team confirmed the fraudulent nature of these SMS messages. They stressed that India Post does not send out such notifications about PAN card updates and encouraged the public to remain vigilant against deceptive practices.
A typical fraudulent message might appear as follows: “Dear user, your India Post Payments Bank account has been blocked today. Please update your PAN Card immediately. Click here: https://surl.li/iccpf.” This message is crafted to instill a sense of urgency, tricking recipients into clicking the link and potentially revealing sensitive information.
To safeguard against falling prey to such scams, the public is advised to take several precautions:
- Exercise Caution with Unexpected Messages: Be wary of texts from unknown senders or unfamiliar organizations.
- Avoid Clicking on Links: Links in suspicious messages are often part of phishing schemes aimed at stealing personal information.
- Verify Information Through Official Channels: Contact the supposed sender directly via official means to verify the message’s legitimacy.
- Never Share Personal Information via SMS: Never disclose sensitive details like bank account numbers in response to a text message.
- Report Suspicious Messages: Report fraudulent SMS messages to your mobile service provider and authorities.
- Update Your Device: Keep your device up to date with regular updates.
