The BCCI initiates talks with IPL franchises for retention policy
In an exciting development for cricket fans, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has begun discussions with Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises regarding the retention policy. According to a recent report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI is aiming to finalize the policy by the end of this month in preparation for a mega auction later this year.
The BCCI has already engaged with franchise CEOs to gather their views on player retention and the salary cap for the next three years. It has been reported that the ‘BCCI is expected to maintain the Impact Player rule for the time being’, which will add an interesting dynamic to player retention strategies.
Opinions on the retention policy among franchises seem to vary, with some suggesting 5-7 retentions, while others are in favor of retaining up to 8 players. Surprisingly, there are also franchises that have proposed the idea of no retention at all, which could lead to a major shake-up in team compositions.
In the 2021 IPL auction, franchises were allowed to retain a maximum of four players, but discussions are now taking place regarding a potential increase in the salary cap for the next auction. Currently set at Rs 100 crore, there is speculation that the cap could be raised by Rs 20 crore.
Another interesting point of discussion is the use of Right To Match (RTM) cards, which were not utilized in the 2021 auction. Franchises have been asked to provide their feedback on this matter as well.
The meeting between the BCCI and franchise CEOs is expected to take place by the end of July, as some key stakeholders are currently unavailable. The outcome of these discussions will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the upcoming IPL season and the strategies employed by franchises to build their teams.
