The New Google Maps Update: Better Directions with Fused Orientation Provider API
We’ve all heard the horror stories of Google Maps leading people astray and getting them stuck in unwanted situations. But fear not, as a recent post on the Android Developers blog sheds light on an upcoming update that aims to improve the direction accuracy of Maps.
The update will involve integrating the Fused Orientation Provider (FOP) API, which is designed to enhance orientation detection on Android devices. This means that regardless of the hardware variations among different device manufacturers, Maps will now have a more precise understanding of directions.
By combining data from the gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer, Maps will be able to interpret directions more effectively. Though Google has utilized this API in the past, the new update promises a significant improvement in mitigating magnetic interference.
It’s not just Google Maps that will benefit from this upgrade – third-party apps relying on Google Maps for navigation will also see a positive impact. The changes will be implemented within the backend of Google Maps, so users won’t notice any alterations to the app’s interface or layout.
The updated API will be rolled out gradually through server-side updates or app updates for Android devices running Android 5.0 or higher.
How Will This Update Impact Users?
Don’t expect any visible changes to the app’s design or layout from this update. The modifications are internal, in the form of an API update that will be automatically pushed out to users. The end result will be a more refined navigating experience, especially in congested areas.
