India’s Bowling Strategy: Top-Order Batsmen to Bowl
In a surprising move, bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule has suggested that India will continue to provide their top-order batsmen with opportunities to bowl in matches. This strategy, he believes, can catch the opposing team off guard and introduce a new element of surprise to India’s game plan.
In the recent ODI against Sri Lanka, which ended in a thrilling tie, opener Shubman Gill was given the chance to display his bowling skills. Despite conceding 14 runs in his solitary over, Bahutule confirmed that this unconventional strategy will be a regular feature in India’s gameplay going forward.
“Our batters are also good bowlers in their own right. While their primary focus is on batting, they possess the necessary skills to contribute with the ball as well,” stated Bahutule in a post-match press conference.
Notably, Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka, a top batsman, showcased his all-round abilities by bowling 8.5 overs and taking three crucial wickets for just 30 runs. His performance played a key role in securing the tie for Sri Lanka.
Bahutule pointed out instances from the recent T20I series where part-time bowlers like Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh were called upon to bowl, emphasizing the importance of having multiple bowling options in the shortest format of the game.
“The inclusion of these part-time bowlers in the playing eleven showcases the significance of having versatile bowling options in T20 cricket. Moving forward, we will continue to explore the idea of utilizing top-order batsmen as bowlers, depending on pitch conditions and match situations,” Bahutule explained.
Reflecting on the match against Sri Lanka, Bahutule felt that India had the chance to build more substantial partnerships, especially after a strong start to their innings. He believed that the team could have capitalized on the foundation laid by the openers and set a more imposing total on the board.
“To have a tie in an ODI is always thrilling. While we could have secured the win with just one more run, I appreciate the team’s bowling efforts. We had moments of good batting, but we missed out on key partnerships that could have taken us over the line with fewer wickets lost,” remarked Bahutule.
He also acknowledged the strategic use of spinners by the Sri Lankan team on a conducive pitch. Despite the challenges posed by the opposition, Bahutule praised Rohit Sharma’s impactful innings, which laid the foundation for India’s competitive performance.
“Rohit’s commanding start was crucial for us, setting the tone for the innings. His aggressive intent and responsibility as a leader were evident throughout his innings. It was a seamless transition for him after the World Cup, showcasing his prowess against any bowling attack,” Bahutule added.
