Sharad Pawar Declines CM Candidacy, Focuses on Change in Government
Sharad Pawar, the influential leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), made it clear that none from his party is vying to be the chief minister’s face of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition in Maharashtra. In a recent statement, he emphasized that the primary goal remains to bring about a change in governance within the state.
Pawar firmly stated, “As far as my party is concerned, no one from my party is interested. We are not projecting anyone [as the CM face].” He further asserted, “We just want change in the government here, as we want to give good governance to the state. So, who will or will not be the CM is not a question for me.”

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray recently urged the alliance partners to prioritize selecting the CM face before considering party victories. He expressed his readiness to support any candidate announced by allies including the Congress and NCP.
The MVA coalition, composed of Shiv Sena, Congress, and NCP factions, aims to challenge the current government power in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections.
Emphasizing the need for unity and a focused approach, Pawar stated, “First, decide [the CM’s face] and then go ahead but do not go by this policy [those having the most seats will get the CM’s post].” He emphasized the importance of presenting a united front to the people of Maharashtra.
With the Maharashtra Assembly elections looming, the focus remains on unseating the current ruling coalition. The Election Commission is yet to announce the poll dates, setting the stage for an intense political showdown in the state.
