Exciting news for oil enthusiasts as prices bounced back and halted their recent four-day decline on Thursday, August 22, surging by two percent. This increase was fueled by the growing anticipation of signals for a US Federal Reserve interest rate cut ahead of the upcoming Jackson Hole event. Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell is scheduled to speak to policymakers on Friday, August 23.
Brent crude futures saw a gain of $1.55, or 2.04 percent, reaching $77.6 a barrel. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate crude futures also rose by $1.52, or 2.11 percent, hitting $73.45. In terms of domestic prices, crude oil futures were last seen trading 0.03 percent lower at ₹6,156 per barrel on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX).

What’s fueling the surge in crude oil prices?
– The US Federal Reserve’s July meeting minutes, released on Wednesday, revealed that most Fed officials were in favor of an interest rate cut next month. This heightened the likelihood of a rate cut, which typically leads to decreased borrowing costs and increased demand for crude oil.
– Additionally, on Thursday, the US Labor Department reported a slight uptick in jobless claims last week, indicating a stabilization near levels consistent with a cooling labor market. This has set the stage for potential interest rate cuts.
– Further supporting oil prices, a US government report on Wednesday showed reductions in crude, gasoline, and distillate inventories, surpassing expectations. This suggests a pickup in demand for oil.
– In the Middle East, ongoing attacks on international shipping by Iran-aligned Houthi militants, in solidarity with Palestinians amidst conflict with Israel and Hamas, are contributing to the turmoil.
– The recent attack on a Greek-flagged oil tanker in the Red Sea, abandoned by its crew and now posing an environmental hazard, as indicated by the EU’s Red Sea naval mission “Aspides,” highlights the ongoing risks within the region.
– Investors are closely monitoring OPEC and its allies, including Russia, amidst considerations to halt planned production increases in October. OPEC has suggested a pause or reversal in output adjustments if necessary.

Where are oil prices likely headed?
Analysts point out that the recent labor data revision in the US has sparked recession concerns, adding pressure on crude oil prices. With China being a significant consumer of oil globally, anxieties surrounding demand are also contributing to price fluctuations.
Despite these challenges, factors such as declining US oil stocks, expectations of a Fed rate cut following weak US job market data, and the weakening dollar index are bolstering oil prices at lower levels, potentially leading to a rebound.
‘’The uncertainty surrounding a potential Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement could further support crude oil prices at current levels. We anticipate continued volatility in crude oil prices, with support expected at $70.70-$70.00 and resistance at $72.30-$73.10. In terms of INR, crude oil has support at ₹5,940-₹5,880, with resistance at ₹6,110-₹6,180,” stated Rahul Kalantri, VP of Commodities at Mehta Equities Ltd.
