Mohammed Shami Set for Return to Competitive Cricket
The seasoned fast bowler, Mohammed Shami, is gearing up for a comeback to competitive cricket after undergoing ankle surgery and subsequent rehabilitation. Reports suggest that Shami is likely to represent his state team, Bengal, in the upcoming Ranji Trophy matches.
Shami is expected to feature in at least one of Bengal’s initial Ranji fixtures, with potential matches against UP on October 11 and Bihar on October 18. Due to the short gap between the games, it is unlikely that he will participate in both matches.
His return to domestic cricket could pave the way for an international comeback, possibly featuring in the Test matches against New Zealand later this year. The Test series against New Zealand begins on October 19 in Bengaluru, followed by matches in Pune and Mumbai.
The 34-year-old fast bowler last played for India in the ODI World Cup final in November 2021. Since his surgery in February this year, Shami has been rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy, gradually working towards full fitness.
Although there were initial rumors of his availability for the Duleep Trophy, it has been decided that Shami will likely skip that tournament to focus on his recovery. The selectors are keen on ensuring that India’s pace trio of Bumrah, Shami, and Siraj are fit for the upcoming Australian tour.
With 229 wickets in 64 Tests, including several match-winning performances, Shami remains a crucial asset for the Indian cricket team. Fans are eagerly awaiting his return to the field and are hopeful for a successful comeback in the upcoming matches.
