As the Democratic National Convention kicked off in Chicago, Michelle Obama made her voice heard loud and clear in support of Kamala Harris. The former First Lady didn’t hold back in criticizing Donald Trump for his racist attacks and calling attention to the struggles faced by everyday Americans. She even cleverly pointed out that the job Trump is seeking – the US Presidency – might just be considered a ‘Black job’ now.
“Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those ‘Black jobs?'” Obama asked, igniting cheers from the crowd.
Kamala Harris is set to formally accept the party’s nomination for president at the convention. If elected, she will make history as the first Black and South Asian person to hold the position of US president.
This statement directly challenges Trump’s claims about undocumented migrants taking ‘Black jobs’. According to Obama, the term ‘Black jobs’ simply refers to any job held by an individual.
Trump has been vocal about his belief that undocumented migrants are taking away jobs from the Black community. During a recent conference with Black journalists, he reiterated this sentiment, claiming that “millions and millions of people” coming from the border are taking these so-called Black jobs.
In addition to criticizing Trump’s stance on immigration, Michelle Obama didn’t hold back in calling out his “ugly, misogynistic, racist lies” that have targeted her husband, former President Barack Obama.
“His narrow view of the world led him to feel threatened by the success of two highly educated, Black individuals,” she stated boldly.
Describing Kamala Harris as “one of the most qualified people” to seek the US presidency, Obama emphasized that no one person has a monopoly on what it means to be American. This statement came after Trump made references to Harris as ‘a child of immigrants’.
