Even though Daniel Loeb’s Third Point LLC had some of the best-performing megacap technology stocks in its flagship fund, it failed to outperform the S&P 500 Index last quarter. In a recent investor letter, the fund reported a 1.8% rise in the second quarter, falling short of the S&P 500 Index’s 4.3% gain.
This trend of underperformance continued from the first quarter, despite the fund having nearly half its equity portfolio invested in AI-related companies. Third Point increased its exposure to AI in the second quarter by acquiring shares of Apple Inc.
The fund saw potential in Apple due to stagnant earnings growth and undervaluation by institutional investors. Third Point believes that AI-related demand could significantly boost Apple’s revenue and earnings in the coming years.
While many hedge funds reduced their positions in mega-cap stocks, Third Point remained bullish on Apple and Amazon.com. In particular, Apple saw a significant increase in hedge fund purchases in the second quarter.
Emphasizing a focus on companies with competitive advantages and unique offerings, Third Point remains optimistic about adding new names to its portfolio beyond the Magnificent Seven. Positions in other key performers like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd., Alphabet Inc., and Amazon.com Inc. also contributed positively to the fund’s performance.
However, there were some negative contributors as well, including Corpay, Bath & Body Works Inc., and Airbus SE. Third Point acknowledges the ongoing market volatility and has adjusted its portfolio to capitalize on dislocated securities, especially in credit.
As the market continues to experience fluctuations, Third Point remains vigilant and prepared to navigate through potential ups and downs. The fund sees opportunities in distressed assets and remains optimistic about its investment strategy in the face of evolving market conditions.
