In a recent controversy that has gripped the Indian political arena, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge has called out Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his controversial tweet regarding BJP MP Anurag Thakur’s expunged remarks on caste in the Lok Sabha. The incident took place during a heated discussion in the Lower House, where Thakur’s comments about Gandhi’s caste caused uproar among the Opposition members.
Kharge condemned PM Modi’s decision to tweet about the incident, stating, “PM Modi should know where to speak and who to defend…Leaving that aside, he is inflaming sentiments.” The Congressman expressed his disappointment with the Prime Minister’s actions, questioning the need for such provocative behavior in Parliament.
Following Thakur’s controversial remarks, PM Modi took to social media to share a snippet of the speech, praising his colleague for his “perfect mix of facts and humor.” However, Kharge was quick to criticize the tweet, highlighting the immaturity displayed by Thakur and questioning the Prime Minister’s involvement in the matter.
In a statement to news agency ANI, Kharge emphasized that such behavior has no place in Parliament, stating, “Nobody’s caste is asked in the Parliament…He [Thakur] said this purposely to insult him [Rahul Gandhi]. This is not right.” The Congress leader also pointed out the hypocrisy of the BJP leaders, noting that several of them have had inter-caste marriages.
In response, the BJP defended their stance, arguing that there should be no issue in questioning Rahul Gandhi’s caste when other public figures, including government officials, judges, and journalists, are not exempt from such inquiries.
The ongoing debate surrounding caste politics in India continues to spark heated discussions and divisions among political parties, with the underlying question of when and where such sensitive topics should be addressed. As the nation grapples with complex social issues, the role of leaders in promoting unity and inclusivity remains a contentious subject for debate.
