The Maharashtra government’s recent announcement to provide pensions to Warkaris, the community of senior citizens who undertake the annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur in devotion to Lord Vithal, has garnered attention and appreciation. This decision, revealed in the state’s budget, is believed to be a strategic move to attract the Warkaris ahead of the upcoming assembly elections later this year.
In line with this endeavor, the government has established the Mukhya Mantri Varkari Sampradaya Mahamandal under the Social Justice Department. This corporation aims to offer various facilities to Kirtankars, Warkaris, Bhajani Mandals, and manage the Palkhi routes. The headquarters of this initiative in Pandharpur has received an initial allocation of ₹50 crores.
With the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti government spearheaded by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde taking proactive steps, the decision to provide pensions to Warkaris has been well-received. This move is seen as a response to the efforts of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), with prominent leaders like Sharad Pawar of NCP (SP) and Rahul Gandhi of Congress showing interest in participating in the wari.
As part of this initiative, a fund of ₹20,000 per Dindi (group of devotees) will be provided this year, totaling ₹36.71 crores for the Nirmal Vari project aimed at setting up portable toilets along the pilgrimage routes, as reported by Times of India.
The Warkari movement holds deep roots in the Bhakti tradition, tracing back to the revered 17th-century saint Sant Tukaram Maharaj from Dehu. Every year, thousands of Warkaris embark on a 21-day spiritual journey from Alandi and Dehu to the Vithoba temple in Pandharpur, culminating on Ashadi Ekadashi.
With Maharashtra heading to polls in October-November, the political landscape is gaining momentum. NCP chief, Sharad Pawar has expressed confidence in the opposition MVA’s performance, projecting a favorable outcome in the upcoming election for the 288-member Maharashtra assembly.
Pawar’s optimistic outlook on the Maha Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA) potential to secure 225 seats in the election was reinforced as former MLA Sudhakarrao Bhalerao and several colleagues joined the party. This development took place in the presence of NCP leaders Supriya Sule and Jayant Patil at the Yashwantrao Centre in Mumbai, setting the stage for an intense and compelling political contest in the state.
