A recent incident involving a passenger, Tahjana Lewis, and JetBlue has sparked controversy and legal action. Lewis has filed a complaint against the airline, seeking damages of $1.5 million for severe burns she allegedly suffered from a cup of “scalding hot” tea served during a turbulent flight. The incident took place on May 15, aboard Flight 2237 from Orlando, Florida to Hartford, Connecticut.
According to a report by ABC News, the complaint filed on June 24 claimed that the tea was served while the “fasten seat belt” sign was on due to ongoing turbulence, which was described as a “dangerous and hazardous” decision given the circumstances. Lewis, seated behind the passenger who ordered the drink, reportedly sustained “severe” and “disfiguring” burns on her upper chest, breasts, legs, left buttocks, and right arm, resulting in “disfigurement and scarring on all five burn-affected regions.”
Edward Jazlowiecki, Lewis’ attorney, criticized JetBlue’s decision to serve drinks during what he described as “serious” turbulence as “gross negligence.” He also highlighted that the airline failed to provide adequate assistance to Lewis, as the crew did not inquire about medical professionals onboard, did not divert or make an emergency landing, and offered limited help until she disembarked the plane.
The complaint alleges that JetBlue served the beverage at a dangerously high temperature, beyond industry standards. Lewis suffered second-degree and potentially third-degree burns, possibly requiring skin grafting. She sought immediate medical attention at the emergency room and consulted a skin specialist.
In addition to physical pain and partial disability, Lewis’ ability to work has been impacted, and she has endured emotional distress. The incident was also traumatizing for Lewis’ 5-year-old daughter, who was accompanying her on the flight.
