Actor and television host Montel Williams recently took a stand against remarks made by Donald Trump at the convention of Black journalists. Trump questioned Kamala Harris’ ethnicity and made controversial statements that sparked major backlash. Montel Williams, who briefly dated Harris in 2001, found it bizarre that someone like Trump would have the audacity to define what it means to be Black.
The interview between Trump and the Black journalists turned hostile, with Trump being questioned about Kamala Harris being a ‘DEI hire’. Trump responded by questioning the journalist’s definition of ‘DEI’ and claimed that he only knew Harris as having Indian heritage until she ‘turned’ Black a few years ago.
Throughout the interview, Trump seemed to struggle with defining Harris’ background, stating, “So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?… She was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden she made a turn, and she went – she became a Black person.”
The clash between Trump supporters and Democrats intensified, with Harris’ birth certificate being shared on social media. Debate raged over her heritage, with some claiming she is solely Indian and others arguing she is both Indian and Black.
Trump, in typical fashion, boasted about his presidency and claimed to have been the best president for the Black community, after Abraham Lincoln, of course. Despite facing tough questions, he declared that he handled the interview with aplomb.
As a supporter of Kamala Harris, Montel Williams spoke out against misleading claims and defended their past relationship. He expressed admiration for Harris and raised questions about how differently her dating history would have been perceived if she were male.
