Jagathratchakan’s expert juggling of politics, business, and scams

Many years ago, on a flight from Chennai to Delhi, I found myself seated next to S. Jagathratchakan, a Member of Parliament from Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu. Dressed in his signature white shirt and dhoti, he was on his way to attend Parliament. Without any formalities, he engaged in conversation, discussing politics, education, and generational differences. Upon landing in Delhi, he bid farewell gracefully and exited quietly, leaving a lasting impression of humility and simplicity.

Jagathratchakan, a four-time MP from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), is known more for his business acumen than political theatrics. He shies away from making bold statements or indulging in public spectacle, preferring a more low-key approach to both his professional endeavors.

His stint as a Union Minister under the UPA government was overshadowed by allegations of corruption, but his business empire thrived during the same period. His assets grew significantly, sparking controversy and speculation about his motives for entering politics.

Despite facing scrutiny for various irregularities and involvement in scandals like the Coal Scam, Jagathratchakan’s businesses continued to expand across multiple sectors. His recent run-in with the Enforcement Directorate, resulting in a hefty fine, further adds to his controversial legacy.

A hefty fine of ₹908 crore

The recent enforcement action against Jagathratchakan and his family members highlights their alleged violations of FEMA related to foreign investments. The fines imposed by the ED for undisclosed transactions paint a grim picture of financial impropriety.

Amidst legal troubles, Jagathratchakan’s political career has navigated through various party affiliations and electoral victories. His vast business empire includes educational institutions, hospitals, hotels, and other ventures, making him a formidable figure in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

Allegations of tax evasion

Accusations of tax evasion amounting to ₹1,000 crore have further tarnished his reputation, raising questions about the true extent of his wealth and influence. Despite facing multiple controversies, Jagathratchakan’s resilience and connections have allowed him to weather storms in the past.

As he grapples with ongoing legal battles and political scrutiny, the future of Jagathratchakan’s career remains uncertain. With formidable assets and a tangled web of controversies, only time will tell if he emerges unscathed from his current predicament.
