The International Cricket Council (ICC) Aims to Bring Cricket to the Youth Olympics in 2030
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is eager to collaborate with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to introduce cricket into the Youth Olympics in 2030, as reported by Cricbuzz.
Last year, the Indian government announced its intention to bid for the 2030 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Mumbai, along with the 2036 Olympics. Following this news, Vivek Gopalan proposed the idea to William Glenwright, the ICC’s General Manager of Development, who responded positively, stating, “It’s a good idea and something we could look at.”
Various key stakeholders, including ICC CEO Geoff Allardice, Wasim Khan, Claire Furlong, and Chris Tetley, were also informed about this potential initiative through email correspondence between Gopalan and Glenwright.
Gopalan emphasized the significance of including cricket in the YOG, stating, “There is a strong demand for cricket at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) with Mumbai bidding to host the 2030 YOG.” He further highlighted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public proclamation of India’s desire to host both the 2030 YOG and 2036 Olympics.
During an IOC session in Mumbai, Modi hinted at the inclusion of the YOG, shifting the government’s focus to bidding for the 2036 Olympics, as reiterated in his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort.
An email to an ICC representative advocated for cricket’s incorporation into the YOG, emphasizing the potential impact on grassroots cricket globally, especially among ICC Associates. The Youth Olympics, featuring athletes aged 15 to 18, could provide young cricketers with a platform to showcase their talent on a global scale.
The message also noted the strong relationship between the ICC and IOC, indicating the potential for cricket to enhance the Olympic brand and thus become a core sport in the Youth Olympics.
Cricket is set to return to the Olympic Games in 2028 in Los Angeles, marking its first appearance since the 1900 Paris Games. The future looks promising for cricket’s inclusion in major global sporting events.
