India Dominates Sri Lanka in First T20I International
India showcased a dominant performance in the first T20I international against hosts Sri Lanka in Pallekele on Saturday. Led by skipper Suryakumar Yadav’s explosive half-century of 58 runs off 26 balls, India’s top-order batsmen set the stage for a commanding total of 213 for 7 after being put in to bat by the Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka.
The opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal (40 off 21 balls) and Shubman Gill (34 off 16 balls) provided a solid start with a 74-run partnership before falling to consecutive deliveries. Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant then entertained the crowd with a blistering 76-run stand, which propelled India past the 200-run mark despite a middle-order collapse.
However, it was former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra’s witty comment that stole the show post-match. Nehra left young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal speechless with his observation. “Ajay Jadeja asked you what’s the difference when Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were there to open in T20Is. According to me, there is just one difference. If Virat and Rohit were still playing this format, then whatever strokes we saw from you today, you would have played those in the nets. Now you are getting to play those shots in the match because they (Virat and Rohit) are not there,” quipped Nehra.
Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had recently announced their retirement from T20Is after India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup. Nehra’s cheeky comment left everyone in splits and the video clip of the interaction was widely circulated on social media.
While Sri Lanka started their run-chase positively with openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis adding 84 runs, India’s bowlers turned the tide in their favor. Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel picked crucial wickets to restrict the hosts. Riyan Parag’s brilliant spell further dismantled Sri Lanka’s batting lineup, securing a convincing victory for India.
Overall, it was a thrilling contest that highlighted India’s dominance in the T20 format and showcased the team’s depth in talent. Stay tuned for more updates on the ongoing series between India and Sri Lanka!
