The Future of Cricket in Australia – Allan Border Calls for New Stadium Construction
Former Australia captain Allan Border has voiced his opinion on the need for a new cricket stadium to replace the iconic Gabba. The Gabba, which has been a historic venue for Test matches, will not host games starting from the 2026/27 season. This decision marks a significant shift in Australian cricket.
Cricket Australia has confirmed that the MCG and SCG will continue to host the Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests respectively until 2030/31. However, the future of international cricket in Queensland remains uncertain, with discussions ongoing about the Gabba’s role in upcoming cricket seasons.
Allan Border highlighted the outdated facilities and logistical challenges faced by the Gabba, emphasizing the need for a new stadium. He mentioned, “The Gabba is a great Test match pitch but the actual stadium is getting a bit tired. It’s now ranked behind others that have been rebuilt in Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth. For all these reasons, we need to knock it down and do something else.”
The Queensland government had initially planned to demolish and rebuild the Gabba for the 2032 Olympic Games, but the project was scrapped. Instead, investments have been redirected to upgrade existing facilities like the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre, Suncorp Stadium, and the Gabba.
Australia captain Pat Cummins shared his thoughts on the situation, stating, “We love playing at the Gabba. The Queensland crowds are good, and it’s always nice weather. We’ll wait and see what happens, but at least the next two years are still locked away for the Gabba.”
The future of cricket in Australia is at a crossroads, with the debate over the Gabba’s future heating up. As Allan Border advocates for a new stadium, cricket fans around the world eagerly await the next chapter in Australian cricket history.
