If you thought Google Translate couldn’t get any better, think again! The American tech giant has just expanded its language support with a whopping 110 new languages. This game-changing upgrade, announced recently, makes Google Translate one of the most inclusive translation services out there, now offering a total of 243 languages.
This impressive expansion was made possible by Google’s cutting-edge PaLM 2 large language model (LLM), powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to learn and integrate new languages, including regional dialects and lesser-known languages.
Among the exciting additions are Indian regional dialects like Awadhi and Marwadi. This milestone is part of Google’s ambitious 1,000-language initiative, which aims to make AI models that can support the top 1,000 spoken languages globally. The inclusion of these 110 new languages is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
Google’s focus was on adding the most widely used variants of each language, ensuring maximum impact. For example, in the case of the Romani language, the South Vlax Romani dialect was chosen due to its popularity online. Availability of textual data for training the AI model also played a crucial role in selecting new languages to be added.
Some standout additions include Cantonese, a highly requested language on Google Translate, and Afar, a tonal language spoken in multiple countries in Africa. Africa represents a significant portion of the new languages added, showcasing Google’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
In a blog post, Google highlighted the invaluable contributions of volunteer communities in identifying and adding new languages, especially in regions with limited digital resources. This expansion underscores Google’s ongoing mission to break down language barriers and provide information to a wider audience.
