The Controversial Captaincy: Why Amit Mishra Prefers Ruturaj Gaikwad Over Shubman Gill
In a candid interview on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube podcast, former Indian spinner Amit Mishra shared his thoughts on the recent appointment of Shubman Gill as India’s T20I captain for the Zimbabwe series. Mishra, who has represented India in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, expressed his surprise at the decision and stated that he would have chosen Ruturaj Gaikwad instead.
Despite the controversy surrounding the captaincy appointment, Shubman led India to a convincing 4-1 series win against Zimbabwe. Mishra pointed out Gill’s inexperience in captaincy, especially citing his performance in the IPL as evidence.
“Just because he is part of the Indian team does not automatically qualify him to be the captain. Gill’s lack of captaincy skills was evident in the recent IPL season. Instead, players like Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, and Ruturaj Gaikwad are better-suited for the role,” Mishra remarked.
Mishra highlighted Gaikwad’s leadership qualities and his ability to perform under pressure, referencing his performances for Chennai Super Kings and during the Asian Games. He commended Gaikwad for his calm demeanor on the field and his consistency across formats.
Regarding the speculation of favoritism towards Shubman Gill due to Rahul Dravid’s influence, Mishra acknowledged that personal preferences exist but emphasized the need for selecting the best candidate for the captaincy role. He believes that Gaikwad’s track record and temperament make him a stronger choice for leading the Indian team.
As the BCCI considers various options for the T20I captaincy, Amit Mishra’s insights shed light on the importance of experience and leadership qualities in appointing the right candidate for the role.
