Former US President, Donald Trump, has recently been embroiled in controversy after his visit to Arlington National Cemetery was accused of being a political stunt. Trump, however, has vehemently denied these claims, stating that he doesn’t need such publicity.
While addressing a rally in Pennsylvania, Trump made it clear, “I don’t need publicity. I get a lot of publicity. I would like to get a lot less publicity … I would hire a public relations agent to get less publicity.”
The US army had accused Trump campaign officials of turning the somber event meant to honor fallen soldiers into a photo opportunity for Trump’s presidential campaign. Two campaign workers were alleged to have disregarded the rules of the cemetery by taking photos at the graves of soldiers.
Trump was photographed giving a thumbs-up gesture while standing amidst the graves of soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan. Despite the controversy, Trump defended his actions by claiming that he was only following the wishes of the families present at the cemetery.
He further went on to criticize President Joe Biden for the deaths of the soldiers, attributing their fate to Biden’s alleged incompetence. Trump accused his opponents of spreading rumors that he had used the soldiers’ graves for personal gain.
While some families defended Trump’s presence at the cemetery, others criticized him for exploiting the visit for his campaign. Trump’s campaign clarified that they had obtained permission in advance to have a photographer present during the visit.
Despite the backlash, Trump remains determined in his bid for a second term in the White House. His visit to Arlington National Cemetery was intended to mark the anniversary of a tragic incident where soldiers lost their lives, and to honor their memory.
