Is Kamala Harris Changing Her Stance on Border Wall Construction?
The Trump campaign has issued a strong response to recent claims suggesting that Vice President Kamala Harris is shifting her position on border wall construction. According to Fox News, the campaign has labelled these assertions as "preposterous."
The controversy stems from reports indicating a potential change in Harris’s stance on the border wall. Karoline Leavitt, national press secretary for the Trump campaign, criticized mainstream media for not challenging Harris’s silence on the issue, despite alleged support from her campaign sources for President Trump’s border wall, dismissing it as a "false claim."
Allegations of Harris’s Changing Stance
Axios reported that Harris may have adjusted her position on the border wall, citing her backing of a bipartisan border security bill introduced in January. This bill, supported by Harris, President Biden, and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, includes border funding but allocates less money for wall construction compared to Trump’s proposed $25 billion. Despite this, the Trump campaign maintains that Harris has consistently opposed the wall.
In her Democratic National Convention speech, Harris emphasized her commitment to border security and pledged to revive the bipartisan border security bill that Trump allegedly thwarted. The Harris campaign has also released ads depicting her as unwavering on border security, featuring images of the Trump-era border wall.
Trump’s Campaign Emphasizes Harris’s Steadfast Opposition
Despite these ads, the Trump campaign underscored Harris’s continual opposition to the border wall. During the Trump administration, over 400 miles of the wall were constructed, but the Biden-Harris administration halted further construction in 2021. Harris previously criticized the wall as "un-American" and ineffective, deeming it "a complete waste of taxpayer money" in 2020.
The Trump campaign has linked Harris to the cessation of wall construction, attributing it to her role as the "border czar," although her responsibilities primarily involved international diplomacy on migration.
Jason Miller’s Strong Denial
Trump senior adviser Jason Miller reiterated the campaign’s position, vehemently rejecting the reports as "total nonsense." Miller stated, "Harris opposes the wall, has always opposed the wall, and stopped wall construction as VP."
The Trump campaign stands firm in its assertion that Harris has not altered her stance on the border wall, dismissing the latest allegations as baseless.
