Transforming Telecom Industry: Trai Sets New Rules for Consumer Services
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has taken a significant step towards ensuring better consumer services by implementing new rules that hold telecom companies accountable for service outages. According to the latest guidelines issued on Friday, operators will now have to compensate subscribers if there is a service outage for more than 24 hours at a district level.
Under the new regulations, Trai has set financial penalties of up to Rs 3 lakh for continued failure to provide adequate services. Additionally, operators could face fines of up to Rs 10 lakh for not submitting compliance reports to the regulator.
Reports published in leading newspapers, including TOI, had earlier highlighted the government’s plans to enhance Quality of Service norms due to the poor consumer services in the telecom sector. These new rules by Trai are a significant step towards achieving that goal.
Focusing on quality benchmarks, Trai has increased the penalty amount for not meeting standards from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh under the revised regulations. The regulator has introduced a graded penalty system ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 10 lakh for different violations of the rules.
The revised regulations, titled “The Standards of Quality of Service of Access (Wirelines and Wireless) and Broadband (Wireline and Wireless) Service Regulations, 2024,” aim to ensure that telecom companies prioritize consumer satisfaction and provide reliable services.
