Australian batsman Steve Smith has recently signed a three-year deal with the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL), dispelling any rumors of an impending retirement from cricket. Despite being omitted from Australia’s squad for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup, Smith remains committed to playing all forms of the game.
The 35-year-old cricketer is set to play four BBL matches at home this summer, in between the final Test match against India and the Sri Lankan tour. Smith expressed his excitement for the upcoming season during a press conference on Tuesday.
During Australia’s previous home summer, Smith took on the role of an opener after David Warner’s retirement from Test cricket. While his average of 56.97 in his career remains impressive, his performance as an opener yielded 171 runs in eight innings at an average of 28.25.
When asked about his batting position for the upcoming five-Test series against India, Smith mentioned that discussions are ongoing, with teammates preferring him at number four. However, he reiterated his flexibility and willingness to bat anywhere for the team.
Regardless of his position in the lineup, Steve Smith’s dedication to the sport and his team remains unwavering. As he embarks on this new chapter with the Sydney Sixers, cricket fans can expect to witness more outstanding performances from this cricketing legend.
