The Rise and Fall of Laxman Narasimhan: Starbucks CEO Replaced
Indian-Americans have been making waves in the corporate world, with leaders like Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai setting new benchmarks in the tech industry. From Raj Subramanium at FedEx to Vivek Sankaran at Albertsons, success stories from the Indian-American community in corporate leadership roles are becoming legendary.
However, not all stories of success have a happy ending. Starbucks recently announced the replacement of its CEO, Laxman Narasimhan, after just 16 months in the role due to the company’s declining sales performance.
Narasimhan, originally from Pune, took over as CEO of Starbucks after leading consumer goods company Reckitt Benckiser in London. Despite his efforts to turnaround the company’s slowing sales in key markets like the US and China, Starbucks’ stock dropped by more than 20% during his tenure.
On the other hand, Chipotle’s CEO Brian Nichol, who will succeed Narasimhan at Starbucks, has seen remarkable success since taking over in 2018. Under Nichol’s leadership, Chipotle’s stock has surged over 700% as US customers shift towards essential food items amidst inflationary trends.
While Starbucks’ board expressed gratitude for Narasimhan’s efforts in trying to improve the business, the decision to replace him was influenced by investor activism and disappointment in his performance by the company’s chairman emeritus, Howard Schultz.
As Laxman Narasimhan departs from Starbucks, the stage is set for a new chapter under Brian Nichol’s leadership. Only time will tell if this change at the top will bring a fresh tide of success for the iconic coffee chain.
