Shafali Verma Leads India to Victory in Women’s Asia Cup T20 Tournament
India’s explosive batter Shafali Verma showcased her talent with a remarkable 48-ball 81, her career-best, guiding the defending champions to a resounding 82-run win over Nepal in the Women’s Asia Cup T20 tournament. The match took place at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla, where India displayed a dominant performance on Tuesday.
The victory secured India’s spot in the semifinals as they put on a commanding display against Nepal. Experimenting with their batting lineup, India saw Shafali Verma and Dayalan Hemalatha open the innings, setting a strong foundation with an impressive 122-run partnership in the first 14 overs.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, India capitalized on this foundation, with Hemalatha contributing a valuable 47 runs to support Verma’s explosive innings. The aggressive approach of the opening pair helped India reach a competitive total of 178 for three. Jemimah Rodrigues added to the total with an unbeaten 28 off 15 balls, boosting the score in the final over.
Defending this challenging target, India’s proficient bowling attack restricted Nepal to 96 for nine in their allotted 20 overs. Nepal needed to surpass Pakistan’s net run rate to secure a semifinal spot, a task they fell short of achieving within the required timeframe. Deepti Sharma stood out with the ball, claiming three wickets for 13 runs, supported by Radha Yadav and Arundhati Reddy, who took two wickets each.
Nepal’s innings saw them struggle against India’s seam and spin attack, resulting in regular wicket losses. Arundhati Reddy’s early breakthroughs set the tone for the match, while Deepti Sharma’s all-round performance, which included a direct hit, highlighted India’s dominance in the field.
Shafali Verma’s aggressive innings was a standout, with her array of shots putting pressure on the Nepalese bowlers. Her 12 fours and a six showcased her attacking intent, especially against medium pacer Kabita Joshi and off-spinner Sabnam Rai. Hemalatha, despite a slower start, provided crucial support with boundaries and a six.
Although Nepal showed moments of resilience, including a missed catch opportunity, India’s batting prowess and disciplined bowling ultimately proved too strong for them. With this win, India secured a place in the semifinals alongside Pakistan from Group A, setting the stage for an exciting continuation of the tournament.
