Rahul Gandhi Calls for Nationwide Caste Census to Empower Marginalized Groups
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reiterated his demand for a nationwide caste census, emphasizing that 90 percent of the country’s population remains marginalized and excluded from the system. He believes that conducting a caste census is essential to empower these individuals and ensure their representation in policy-making processes.
“Ninety per cent of people are sitting outside the system. They possess skills and knowledge but lack the necessary connections. This is why we are advocating for a caste census,” Gandhi stated during the ‘Samvidhan Samman Sammelan’ event in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
#WATCH | Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: Lok Sabha LoP and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi mentions the absence of Dalit, tribal, and OBC women in the Miss India pageant. He criticizes the media for focusing on entertainment rather than important societal issues.
“For the Congress, the caste census serves as the bedrock of policy-making. It provides valuable insights and guidance necessary for shaping inclusive policies. Without a caste census, it is challenging to address the diverse needs of India,” stated Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.
The promise of a nationwide caste census was outlined in the Congress party’s manifesto for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Gandhi emphasized the importance of collecting data on marginalized communities to safeguard the principles of the Constitution.
Gandhi also highlighted the lack of representation for Dalit, tribal, and OBC women in various sectors like the Miss India pageant, illustrating the disparities in opportunity and recognition.
He reaffirmed that the Constitution is meant to protect the rights and interests of all citizens, especially the marginalized and disadvantaged sections of society.
Gandhi pointed out that the Constitution should safeguard the rights of the poor, laborers, and tribals, not just a select few individuals or corporations.
By advocating for a caste census, the Congress aims to uphold the values of the Constitution and prevent a regression to autocratic rule, as seen in historical monarchies.
Furthermore, Gandhi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for centralizing power and undermining democratic principles. He emphasized the role of the Constitution in maintaining a democratic and inclusive society.
In a social media post, Gandhi reiterated that the caste census is crucial for establishing a policy framework that promotes social justice and equality for all sections of society.
