The aftermath of the first presidential debate has left many questioning Joe Biden’s ability to continue as the Democratic nominee. Concerns about his age have resurfaced, with some Democrat politicians and operatives expressing hopes that the 81-year-old Biden would step aside.
“What’s Joe Biden’s superpower? That he’s a good guy who will do the right thing for the country. In this case, that’s stepping aside and letting the DNC choose another nominee,” said Andrew Yang, former Democratic nominee, on X, formerly Twitter.
Will Biden drop out?
If Biden were to withdraw, the Democratic Party’s nominee would be officially chosen at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago from 19-22 August. Delegates, pledged to support Biden, would be free to choose a successor at an open convention if he steps down.
Hostile takeover of nomination unlikely
A hostile takeover of the Democratic nomination is unlikely, as no evidence suggests serious plans to push Biden out. DNC regulations provide minimal loopholes for such an event.
Could VP Kamala Harris replace Joe Biden?
If Biden steps down during his term, Kamala Harris would assume the presidency. However, the same rules do not apply if he withdraws as a candidate for the upcoming election. There is no mechanism favoring the vice-president at an open convention.
Other possible candidates
Potential candidates to replace Biden include Dean Phillips, Marianne Williamson, Gavin Newsom, and Gretchen Whitmer. Newsom, however, has stated his support for Biden and has shown no interest in replacing him.
