The Oldest Man in the World Turns 112
In a care home in Merseyside, the world’s oldest man, John Alfred Tinniswood, celebrated his 112th birthday. Born in 1912, Tinniswood attributes his impressive age to luck and a simple tradition of fish and chips every Friday, as reported by the Guardian.
Earlier this year, Tinniswood became the world’s oldest living man following the passing of 114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez from Venezuela. Since 2020, he has held the title of the UK’s oldest man. Reflecting on his rich life experiences, Tinniswood offered valuable advice to younger generations.
A Lifelong Liverpool FC Fan and Wartime Veteran
Tinniswood, a devoted Liverpool football fan and wartime veteran, was born in the city just 20 years after the club’s founding. He has witnessed many of Liverpool FC’s significant victories, including eight FA Cup wins. At a dance in Liverpool, he met his wife, Blodwen, and they were married for 44 years until her passing in 1986. They had a daughter named Susan, born in 1943, and Tinniswood is now a proud great-grandfather.
During World War II, he served in an administrative role for the Army Pay Corps, making him the oldest surviving male veteran of that conflict. Post-war, he worked as an accountant for companies like Shell and BP until retiring in 1972. Even today, Tinniswood lives independently, managing his finances, staying informed by listening to the radio, and getting out of bed without assistance.
Reflections on Longevity and Life Changes
When asked about his longevity, Tinniswood humbly remarked, “You either live long or you live short, and you can’t do much about it. I don’t feel that age, I don’t get excited over it.” He stressed moderation as a possible key to his long life, emphasizing the importance of balance in all things.
Witness to a Century of Change and Advice to Younger Generations
Over the years, Tinniswood received birthday cards from the late Queen for a decade, starting on his 100th birthday in 2012. He has lived through the reigns of 24 UK prime ministers and witnessed the ever-changing world. His advice to younger generations is simple yet profound: “Always do the best you can, whether you’re learning something or whether you’re teaching someone. Give it all you’ve got.”
As Tinniswood continues to enjoy life at 112, his resilience, wisdom, and positive outlook serve as an inspiration to all who have the privilege of hearing his story.
