Recently, tech giant Google faced a major crisis due to a critical glitch in Google Chrome that caused the disappearance of passwords for around 15 million Windows users. The incident occurred on July 24 and 25, impacting various sectors such as medical institutions, airlines, and banks.
According to a report from Forbes, the disruption was caused by a “change in product behavior” within Google Chrome, specifically affecting the Google Password Manager—a tool used by over three million users to store and autofill passwords. The issue was linked to the M127 version of the Chrome browser on Windows, which made previously saved passwords inaccessible and prevented new passwords from being saved.
For nearly 18 hours, affected users faced difficulties accessing their stored passwords, leading to widespread inconvenience. Google recommended a temporary workaround using a command-line flag to bypass the issue. The problem was eventually resolved after Google released a fix, advising users to restart their browsers to restore functionality.
“We apologize for the inconvenience this service disruption may have caused,” stated Google in an official apology to those affected by the glitch.
The incident has raised concerns about the reliability of online password managers, as many users rely on these tools for various activities. This glitch highlights the potential risks of solely depending on digital password storage solutions. Experts recommend users to have backup plans and to exercise caution with sensitive information stored online.
As the world continues to recover from the recent Crowdstrike update issue that affected numerous businesses worldwide, this latest incident underscores the vulnerabilities in our increasingly digital lives.
