The Sky’s the Limit: 102-Year-Old Woman Sets Record for Oldest Skydiver in Britain
Meet Manette Baillie, a resident of Benhall Green, who recently achieved a groundbreaking milestone. At the age of 102, she became the oldest person in Britain to skydive. Baillie marked her 102nd birthday by taking a leap of faith from a plane at Beccles Airfield, soaring to an altitude of over 2,100 meters (6,900 feet).
Strapped to an assistant, she braved the unknown, feeling a mix of excitement and fear as she plunged into the open sky. “I must admit I shut my eyes very firmly,” she later confessed. Baillie’s daring act sends a powerful message to people in their 80s and 90s that age should never be a barrier to pursuing one’s passions and dreams.
This remarkable skydive was not her first thrilling adventure. On her 100th birthday, she raced a Ferrari around the Silverstone motor racing circuit at a staggering speed of 210 kilometers per hour (130 miles per hour). Inspired by an 85-year-old friend who had previously skydived, Baillie was inspired to take on the challenge.
For Baillie, breaking records is not the main goal. Instead, she wants to leave behind a legacy of limitless possibilities and a zest for life at any age. She firmly believes that life is a continuous journey filled with excitement and unexpected opportunities for growth and adventure.
Aside from her personal triumph, Baillie’s skydive also served as a charitable fundraiser for causes close to her heart. Admirers, including a special message from the Prince of Wales, rallied around her to show support. “I haven’t got long to live and I can’t do much more fundraising, so I wanted to make it a rip-roaring success,” she shared.
This courageous feat now places Baillie in the spotlight, surpassing the previous record set by Verdun Hayes, who held the title of Britain’s oldest parachutist since May 2017 at 101 years and 38 days.
