Exploring Kamala Harris’ Electability Against Donald Trump
After US President Joe Biden’s surprising decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic Party’s nomination, the spotlight is now on Harris’s electoral prospects, especially in a potential matchup against former President Donald Trump.
Recent polls show that Harris is trailing Trump by an average of 2 percentage points nationally, with 46% support compared to Trump’s 48%. This marks a slight improvement over Biden’s position, as he was behind Trump by 3 percentage points, with 47% compared to Trump’s 44%, according to a report from NYT.
In crucial swing state surveys conducted before Biden’s announcement and the attempted assassination of Trump, Harris was only behind by 1 percentage point in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state. Additionally, she held a more significant 5-point lead in Virginia, a state where Biden had a narrow lead. In both states, Harris showed stronger backing from Black voters, younger voters, and women – key demographics crucial for the Democrats’ victory in the upcoming election. These are the groups where Biden seemed to be losing support.
Although Harris’s poll numbers were lower than Biden’s as of April, she has seen gains in recent polls. Concurrently, more Democrats have expressed their preference for Biden to step aside. An AP-NORC poll conducted from July 11-15 revealed that nearly two-thirds of Democrats wanted the president to withdraw from the race, allowing the party to choose an alternative candidate.
