The political landscape in Jharkhand is currently in turmoil as Champai Soren, a senior JMM leader and former chief minister, has made waves by heading to Delhi amidst rumors of joining the BJP, leaving the Hemant Soren-led government in a precarious position.
Champai Soren’s statement about feeling ‘humiliated’ by the JMM and considering retirement, forming a new party, or shifting allegiance sent shockwaves through the political arena, drawing a swift response from Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who accused the BJP of engaging in ‘poaching’ and ‘divisive’ tactics.
Jharkhand Assembly Elections on the Horizon
The unfolding developments come as Jharkhand gears up for its upcoming assembly elections later this year. With the current assembly’s term set to end on January 5, 2025, a new administration must be installed in place before then.
The ruling coalition faces a tough battle against anti-incumbency as they seek re-election in the state. In the previous election, the JMM secured 30 seats out of the 81 total, with the BJP holding 25 seats and the Congress with 16 seats. Ultimately, a coalition of JMM, Congress, and RJD formed the government with Hemant Soren assuming the role of CM, displacing the BJP-led government.
Tensions Since Hemant’s Return
Tensions have been simmering within both the Hemant and Champai factions within the JMM since the power transition on July 3. Champai had to step down as CM, paving the way for Hemant Soren’s reappointment on July 4 after he was released on bail from jail on June 28 in a money-laundering case.
Champai had assumed the position of chief minister after Hemant’s arrest in February 2.
In the wake of the JMM’s victory in just one Lok Sabha seat during the general election in 2019, their strong showing in the subsequent assembly polls resulted in the ousting of the BJP government led by Raghubar Das.
In the recent 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured eight seats, while the JMM’s count increased from one in 2019 to three seats in 2024. The Congress, an ally of the JMM, clinched two seats, and the BJP’s ally AJSU won a single seat in the general elections.
Possible Impact of Champai Soren’s Departure
The potential departure of Champai Soren from the JMM may not pose an immediate threat to the Hemant Soren-led government unless he manages to sway other MLAs along with him.
Currently, with eight seats vacant, the Jharkhand assembly holds 73 seats. Among these, JMM possess 26 seats, Congress with 16, RJD with one, and CPI(ML) MLA Vinod Singh part of the ruling alliance, requiring a majority of 37 seats in the house.
In the opposing camp, the BJP commands 23 seats, with its ally AJSU securing three seats. The NCP holds one seat, alongside two Independents lending support to the NDA.
For now, Hemant Soren’s government seems secured despite Champai Soren’s potential switch to the BJP.
The Tribal Factor
Champai Soren, a prominent tribal leader, and his potential move to the BJP highlights the issue of respect and representation of tribal leaders within the JMM. This could be a crucial element in the upcoming elections.
Previous electoral results indicate that when Hemant Soren was incarcerated during the Lok Sabha polls of 2024, the BJP suffered losses in five tribal-reserved seats in the state. Similarly, in the 2019 assembly elections, the BJP lost 26 out of 28 tribal seats.
Currently, the BJP and its NDA partners have expressed support for Champai Soren amidst the ongoing developments. BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo criticized the JMM following Champai Soren’s recent statements.
Shahdeo expressed, “Champai Soren’s post sheds light on the dictatorial tendencies prevailing within the JMM, highlighting their resistance towards tribal leaders beyond the Soren family.”
Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, leading HAM – an NDA affiliate, welcomed Champai Soren into the ‘NDA family,’ emphasizing his past and continued strength. “Champai da, you were a tiger, you are a tiger, and you will always remain a tiger. Welcome to the NDA family. Johar Tiger,” Manjhi conveyed.
JMM Initiatives towards Champai
Reports suggest that the JMM has extended gestures towards Champai Soren to reconcile the situation. Champai previously served as the transport, scheduled tribes, and scheduled caste and backward class welfare minister in Hemant Soren’s administration from 2019 to 2024 before assuming the CM role.
Representing Seraikella, Champai Soren, also known as ‘Jharkhand’s Tiger,’ has been vocal about his dissatisfaction after his request to nominate his son for the Ghatshila seat in the forthcoming Assembly elections was turned down.
