Recognizing the remarkable advancements in technology, Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet, was recently honored with an honorary Doctor of Science degree by the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, as reported by TOI.
The prestigious accolade, presented during a special ceremony in San Francisco, acknowledges Pichai’s significant contributions to the digital realm and his pivotal role in making technology more accessible on a global scale.
This honorary degree was bestowed upon him by President Droupadi Murmu during the 69th Convocation of IIT-Kharagpur in December of the previous year. To accommodate Pichai’s schedule, a separate ceremony was arranged in the U.S. to honor the distinguished alumnus.
For the uninitiated, Pichai, an alumni of IIT-Kharagpur, earned his Bachelor of Technology in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the institute.
In a noteworthy moment, Pichai’s wife, Anjali Pichai, was also recognized with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, highlighting the couple’s exceptional achievements and their strong ties to the institute. Anjali, who completed her BTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT-Kharagpur in 1993, was lauded for her own impressive accomplishments.
Reflecting on this honor, Sundar Pichai shared his gratitude on Instagram, stating, “Receiving an honorary doctorate from IIT-Kharagpur holds deep meaning for me. My parents always dreamt of me earning a doctorate, and though this one is honorary, it carries great significance. The education and technological groundwork I received at IIT paved the way for my journey to Google and my mission to democratize technology. As AI continues to evolve, IIT-Kharagpur’s role in the tech landscape will grow even more vital, and I am truly thankful for my time there.”
