Investors from around the world are flocking to Indian equities, infusing over Rs 7,900 crore in the first week of this month. This influx comes as the country experiences a robust economic and earnings growth momentum. With total foreign portfolio investment in equities reaching Rs 1.16 lakh crore so far this year, it’s clear that India remains an attractive investment destination.
The upcoming Union Budget and Q1 FY25 earnings will play a crucial role in determining the sustainability of these foreign investments. Experts believe that the healthy economic outlook and earnings growth in India make it difficult for foreign investors to ignore the market for too long.
In June, foreign portfolio investors made a net inflow of Rs 7,962 crore in equities, following a significant inflow of Rs 26,565 crore. These positive trends were primarily driven by political stability and a market rebound. However, in the previous months of May and April, FPIs withdrew significant amounts due to various factors like election jitters, tax treaty concerns, and rising US bond yields.
Experts like Milind Muchhala from Julius Baer India believe that India’s economic momentum remains strong, making it an attractive investment option. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, points out that external factors like US bond yields and valuations in emerging markets often influence FPI flows. When these factors change, foreign investors tend to return to the Indian market.
In the recent fortnight, FPIs heavily invested in telecom and financial services, with additional buying seen in autos, capital goods, healthcare, and IT sectors. On the other hand, sectors like metals, mining, and power, which had experienced rapid growth, saw some selling.
In addition to equities, FPIs also invested Rs 6,304 crore in the debt market during the same period. This raised the total FPI investment in debt to Rs 74,928 crore for the year so far. Factors like the inclusion of Indian government bonds in the JP Morgan EM Govt Bond Index have contributed to the divergence in equity and debt inflows.
Overall, the positive inflow of foreign investments reflects the confidence of global investors in India’s economic growth trajectory. As the country continues to showcase its potential, it remains a beacon for foreign investors seeking promising opportunities.
