Foreign Investors Shifting Focus to Indian IPOs for Higher Returns
Foreign investors are making a strategic shift in their investment approach, moving away from pricey Indian equities and turning towards new offerings in the primary market. This shift is driven by the pursuit of more affordable access to the market and higher potential returns.
The current scenario in Indian stocks, trading at all-time highs with valuations surpassing major global markets, has prompted foreign investors to engage in profit-taking and explore opportunities in initial public offerings (IPOs). In the primary market, valuations are comparatively lower, and there is less competition for stocks.
According to data from India’s Central Depository Services Ltd, foreign investors have sold a net $3.42 billion worth of equities in the secondary market, while purchasing a net $1.47 billion through primary market issuances this month. The trend is evident in a report by Societe Generale (SG), showing that foreigners have acquired more than $6 billion of stocks in the primary market this year, the highest since 2021.
Rajat Agarwal, Asia equity strategist at SG, notes that foreign investors are gravitating towards the primary market due to better and faster return prospects, as well as moderating earnings growth prospects in the secondary market.
The Indian primary market is witnessing significant activity, with IPO listings totaling $7.3 billion so far this year, the highest in Asia. This trend is attributed to the lower valuations in primary markets, making stocks more affordable for foreign investors.
Jon Withaar, head of Asia Special Situations at Pictet Asset Management, highlights that the primary market’s lower valuations are a result of limited competition from various types of investors, paving the way for potential growth in the long run.
Michael Collins, CEO of WinCap Financial, emphasizes that companies offering IPOs price their shares conservatively to attract investor interest, presenting foreign investors with an opportunity to capitalize on future growth prospects.
With the US Federal Reserve expected to lower interest rates and investors seeking higher returns in riskier markets, analysts anticipate that foreign investors will continue to explore Indian stocks through the primary market route.
By opting for IPOs in the Indian market, foreign investors are leveraging lower valuations, potential growth opportunities, and a less competitive landscape to navigate their investment strategies. This shift indicates a strategic move towards maximizing returns in a dynamic and evolving market scenario.
