Don’t Fall Into the Trap of False Claims on Your Income Tax Returns!
Are you getting ready to file your income tax returns? Make sure to stay honest and accurate in your claims to avoid penalties and delays in refunds. The Income Tax Department has issued a warning against making false claims, such as overstating deductions, understating income, or claiming fake expenses.
According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), over five crore income tax returns have been submitted as of July 26, with the filing deadline for the assessment year 2024-25 approaching on July 31 for non-audited accounts.
It’s crucial to file your returns accurately to expedite the refund process. The department advises that any discrepancies in claims can lead to requests for revised returns, causing further delays in refunds. So, it’s essential to double-check your filings before submission to ensure everything is in order.
As a taxpayer, you have the choice to lessen your tax burden by claiming deductions and exemptions under the old ITR filing system or opt for the new regime with lower tax rates but without those benefits. The government is encouraging taxpayers to embrace the new regime to simplify the direct tax system, with over 66% of filings done under this model.
If you’re experiencing delays in refunds, be sure to check your e-filing account for messages from the Income Tax Department. You can respond through the “pending action and worklist section” tab to address any outstanding issues promptly.
Regarding the recent proposal to extend the withholding of refunds from 30 to 60 days for cases with existing or likely demands against the assessee, the CBDT Chairman assured that such occurrences would be minimal. Once the assessment is complete, taxpayers have 30 days to settle any demands, and refunds can be adjusted during this period.
Stay informed and compliant with the latest tax regulations to avoid complications during the filing process and enjoy a hassle-free experience. Keep your finances in order and file your income tax returns accurately to secure timely refunds without any setbacks.
Remember, honesty is the best policy when it comes to income tax filings. Stay truthful, stay accurate, and stay ahead of the game!
