India’s ambition to become a top 10 shipbuilder by 2030, as outlined in the Maritime India Vision 2030, aligns perfectly with Adani’s plan. The aim is to climb to the top five by 2047, in accordance with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision. Currently, India ranks 20th in the global commercial shipbuilding market, holding a meager 0.05% share.
Shipbuilding Plans
A KPMG report presented at a recent workshop by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways predicts that India’s commercial shipbuilding market could be valued at $62 billion by 2047. Adani’s shipbuilding initiative is a key component of the Rs 45,000 crore expansion project for Mundra Port, which recently received environmental and coastal regulation zone clearance.
Unlike newcomers, Adani already has the necessary land and clearances in place, enabling a swift entry into the heavy engineering sector. This marks the group’s maiden venture in this domain. The timing of Adani Group’s shipbuilding foray is serendipitous, coinciding with the global maritime industry’s shift towards eco-friendly vessels to meet decarbonization goals.
With over 50,000 ships needing replacement in the next three decades, the demand for new vessels is expected to surge. According to KPMG, the ancillary industry, encompassing tier 1, 2, and 3 suppliers, could add $37 billion in value by 2047, potentially generating about 12 million jobs. To meet the targets set in the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision, Indian shipyards must significantly ramp up their annual output, from the current 0.072 million GT to 0.33 million GT by 2030, and further to 11.31 million GT by 2047.
India presently boasts eight state-owned shipyards and around 20 private facilities, including Larsen & Toubro Ltd’s unit at Kattupalli. Aside from Cochin Shipyard Ltd, state-owned yards, managed by the Ministry of Defence, primarily focus on naval ship construction. The private sector, on the other hand, leans towards defense vessels due to the perceived lower risk.
Adani’s venture into shipbuilding signifies a bold step towards reshaping India’s maritime landscape, as the nation aims to climb the ranks in the global shipbuilding arena. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development!
