Speculation is rife about a possible rift within the Uttar Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following the party’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha election in the state. Amidst this turmoil, Samajwadi Party (SP) MP and chief Akhilesh Yadav has made a tantalizing “monsoon offer” to dissatisfied ruling party MLAs. In a bold move, Akhilesh Yadav has challenged them to bring together a hundred MLAs to form a new government in Uttar Pradesh.
In a tweet, Akhilesh Yadav declared, “Monsoon offer: Sau lao, sarkaar banao [Bring a hundred, form government].” This strategic move is a clear message to those within the BJP who may be disenchanted with the current leadership under Yogi Adityanath and are considering a switch to the Opposition.
While Akhilesh Yadav did not mention any names in his post, a senior party leader revealed to news agency PTI that the message was aimed at dissatisfied BJP members who might be looking for a change in direction.
“The SP secured 111 seats in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, and with the support of 100 discontented BJP MLAs, we could easily establish a new government,” the SP leader was quoted as saying by PTI.
Signs of discontent within the Uttar Pradesh BJP have been brewing for some time, with Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s recent remarks underscoring the tension. In a statement emphasizing the supremacy of the party over the government, Maurya called on all ministers, MLAs, and public representatives to show respect towards party workers.
Maurya asserted, “The organization is greater than the government; the grievances of the workers are my grievances. No individual is above the organization; the workers represent our essence.”
On July 16th, Keshav Prasad Maurya held a meeting with BJP chief JP Nadda, although details of the discussion have not been disclosed to the public.
Speculations about strained relations between Maurya and Adityanath have been circulating for some time. Several BJP leaders from the state, including those who faced defeat in the recent Lok Sabha polls, have criticized the chief minister’s approach, citing it as a factor contributing to their losses.
