Seven Arrested in Germany and Sweden for Crimes in Syria
Recently, authorities in Germany and Sweden announced the arrest of seven individuals suspected of committing crimes against humanity and war crimes in Syria between 2012 and 2014. This coordinated effort involved multiple European agencies, including Eurojust, Europol, and others.
In Germany, four individuals, known as Jihad A, Mahmoud A, Sameer S, and Wael S, were arrested. These suspects were affiliated with the Free Palestine Movement, an armed militia in Syria, since early 2011. The federal prosecutor in Germany stated that the arrested individuals were strongly suspected of killing and attempting to kill civilians, as well as engaging in torture.
According to the German authorities, these suspects were involved in a violent crackdown on a peaceful protest in al-Yarmouk, Damascus, in 2012. The crackdown resulted in the death of six individuals and serious injuries to others. The suspects also allegedly abused civilians and engaged in other heinous acts.
Three of the arrested individuals – Jihad A, Sameer S, and Wael S – are stateless Syrian Palestinians, while Mazhar J is a Syrian national. They are facing serious charges related to their alleged crimes in Syria.
In Sweden, three individuals were also arrested in connection to the same case. Further details about the arrests were not provided by the authorities. The prosecution authorities in Sweden are currently deciding whether the individuals should be detained or released.
This significant development sheds light on the ongoing efforts to hold perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity accountable, despite the challenging circumstances involved.
