Virginia voters are currently caught up in a tight race between US Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump, as revealed by a recent Roanoke College poll. Reports indicate that most voters see Trump as a significant “threat to democracy.”
A survey conducted by The Washington Post prior to the Democratic National Convention found Harris leading with 47%, slightly ahead of Trump’s 44%. The margin between the two candidates falls within the poll’s margin of error of ±4.5 percentage points.
Even with the inclusion of other candidates, Harris maintains a lead with 45% compared to Trump’s 42%. Noteworthy contenders like Robert F Kennedy Jr and Cornel West have garnered 13% of voter support.
According to Harry Wilson, a senior political analyst at the Institute for Policy and Opinion Research, the transition from President Joe Biden to Harris has had an impact, albeit not as significant as anticipated.
While Virginia remains a fierce battleground for US Presidential Polls, Harris appears to have a slight advantage over Trump, performing better than Biden in previous electoral records.
Harris Leading, Trump Trailing
Joe Biden’s approval ratings in Virginia remain low, with only 37% of voters viewing him favorably. Conversely, Harris holds a 43% favorable rating compared to Trump’s 40%. The majority of voters find both candidates unfavorable.
Both vice-presidential candidates, Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and GOP Sen. JD Vance, face negative ratings with Walz at 34% favorable and Vance at 32% favorable.
Is Donald Trump a Threat to Democracy?
The poll highlights a divided electorate, with 51% of voters seeing Trump as a “threat to democracy” and 47% expressing similar concerns about the nomination process for Harris. Dissatisfaction also extends to Walz and Vance, as indicated in the report.
Conducted from August 12 to August 16, the survey included 691 likely voters with data collected through phone calls, text messages, and an online panel (The Washington Post).
