Breaking Language Barriers in Coding with AI – GitHub CEO
NEW DELHI: In a recent interaction at the ET World Leaders Forum, Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub, shared his vision of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can revolutionize the coding environment by breaking down language barriers. Dohmke believes that AI will empower non-English developers to make significant contributions to the open-source community, creating a more inclusive coding environment.
According to Dohmke, “AI is a great equalizer. It will allow developers to navigate code bases without being fluent in English by using tools like Copilot in languages such as Hindi or Kannada. This shift towards embracing non-English languages as an entry point into coding will open up new avenues for collaboration and innovation.”
He emphasized that AI will democratize coding for developers in countries where English fluency may be a barrier, enabling them to contribute to global technological progress. GitHub, known as the largest team sport on Earth, has seen a significant increase in developers from India, with over 15.4 million Indian developers on the platform.
The growing momentum in the Indian developer community, now three times larger than in 2021, is projected to surpass the US developer base by 2027. Dohmke highlighted the potential economic opportunities for India as the world’s largest nation of software developers by 2027.
A recent GitHub report revealed that developers using GitHub Copilot completed tasks 55% faster than those who did not. This showcases the efficiency and productivity gains facilitated by AI tools in the coding process.
With AI bridging language barriers and fostering collaboration among developers worldwide, the future of coding looks more inclusive and innovative than ever before.
