The Battle of Character: Can Trump Win on Character Alone?

Recently, Rich Lowry faced criticism for his column in The New York Times, where he argued that Donald Trump could win the upcoming presidential election based on character rather than policies. Lowry emphasized that presidential races often pivot on a candidate’s character traits rather than their policy positions.

In his column, Lowry wrote, “Presidential races are won and lost on character as much as the issues, and often the issues are proxies for character. Not character in the sense of a candidate’s personal life, but the attributes that play into the question of whether someone is suited to the presidency — is he or she qualified, trustworthy and strong, and does he or she care about average Americans?”

Lowry pointed out that campaigns are deeply personal, focusing on disqualifying the opponent rather than promoting one’s platform. He cited past examples, such as the Obama team’s attacks on Mitt Romney, which centered on his character rather than policy differences.

Building on his argument, Lowry suggested that Trump’s path to victory lies in attacking Kamala Harris’ character, portraying her as weak and phony. He urged Trump to shift the focus of his attacks from policy issues to Harris’ personal attributes, arguing that she lacks the strength and integrity required for the presidency.

By highlighting Harris’ alleged weaknesses, such as her failure to win the Democratic primary or engage in extensive media interactions, Lowry suggested that Trump could effectively undermine her credibility and suitability for office.

While some commentators, like Keith Olbermann, criticized Lowry’s perspective, others echoed his sentiment that character attacks could be a potent strategy in the current political climate. Despite potential backlash, Lowry maintained that Trump’s campaign should prioritize targeting Harris’ character flaws to make a persuasive case against her presidency.

In conclusion, the debate over whether Trump can secure victory based on character alone continues to divide opinions. As the election draws nearer, the role of character in shaping voter perceptions remains a central theme in the ongoing political discourse.
