Pakistan and Bangladesh Penalized in First Test at Rawalpindi

It was a disappointing day for both Pakistan and Bangladesh as they were penalized for maintaining a slow over-rate in the first Test at Rawalpindi. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that Pakistan lost six World Test Championship points, while Bangladesh lost three, following the findings of the match referee.

In addition to the point deductions, financial penalties were also imposed, with Pakistan fined 30% of their match fee and Bangladesh fined 15%. The match referee, Ranjan Madugalle, imposed the sanctions after determining that Pakistan fell short by six overs of the target, and Bangladesh by three overs, even after accounting for time allowances.

As a result of these penalties, Bangladesh dropped to seventh place in the standings, behind South Africa, while Pakistan remained in the eighth spot. Both captains, Shan Masood and Najmul Hossain Shanto, accepted the offenses and the proposed sanctions, eliminating the need for formal hearings.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh secured a ten-wicket win in the first Test, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. They are set to face Pakistan again in the second Test at Rawalpindi on Friday.

In a separate incident during the same game, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan was fined 10% of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Additionally, one demerit point was added to his disciplinary record, marking his first offense in 24 months. The incident occurred during the 33rd over of Pakistan’s second innings when Shakib threw the ball inappropriately towards the batter.

Shakib admitted to the offense and accepted the sanctions proposed by Madugalle, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. The charges against Shakib were levied by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Adrian Holdstock, third umpire Michael Gough, and fourth umpire Rashid Riaz.

It was a contentious match with various incidents, but Bangladesh emerged victorious in the end. Both teams will look to learn from these penalties and come back stronger in the upcoming games.
