RBI sells 6M in Indian Bonds as Index Inclusion drives inflows: Report

India’s central bank recently made a strategic move by selling ₹34 billion ($406 million) of bonds in the secondary market. This decision was aimed at absorbing excess cash in the banking system, which had resulted from the influx of funds into the nation’s debt after its inclusion in a global index, as per a recent report by Bloomberg.

The Reserve Bank of India conducted the bond sales over a span of four days, as documented in the monetary authority’s weekly statistical supplement.

In July, foreign investments in local bonds exceeded $1 billion following the inclusion of Indian bonds in JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s prominent emerging market bond index last month. This move led to an increase in local rupee liquidity, with the central bank absorbing the inflows to bolster reserves. The RBI bolstered its reserves by $9.7 billion during that week, according to the data.

India’s banking system liquidity underwent a significant shift to a surplus after being in the deficit for the majority of the year, largely due to governmental spending post-elections and the central bank’s initiatives. The excess liquidity that banks deposited with the central bank amounted to 1.4 trillion rupees, based on a Bloomberg Economics index.

India made history by becoming the 25th market to be included in the index since its inception in June 2005. This milestone inclusion is expected to attract global inflows of $20 billion to $25 billion into the Indian bond market.

“Once liquidity in the banking system surpasses 500 billion rupees in surplus or deficit, the RBI typically steps in to intervene. In recent weeks, we’ve witnessed a surplus exceeding that threshold, which could pose challenges for the central bank if it persists,” explained Alok Singh, head of treasury at CSB Bank.

Market traders are eagerly awaiting the federal budget announcement on Tuesday to evaluate the government’s borrowing strategy for the fiscal year. The government aims to secure 14.1 trillion rupees through bonds in the current financial year that began on April 1.
